STUDENT LIFE

Curriculum and Community Partners

CARIBE students are hardworking students. They devote much of their time and efforts to learning English and pursuing their life goals, eventually reaching their American Dream. One of the greatest benefits of attending refugee-specific schools for English Language Instruction is instruction and lesson activities are differentiated to individual students' goals, may it be to attend vocational training, obtain certification in a certail skill or craft, attend college or university, or immediately enter the labor market. CARIBE teachers take their time learning about their students and establish rapport to immediately gain their trust. CARIBE teachers are also very sensitive to the life experiences or refugees and grandually incorporates coping skills within their lessons.

The CARIBE model of Adult ESOL instruction is a model for the school district of Hillsborough County. Adult ESOL teachers across the school district are encouraged to observe and collaborate with CARIBE teachers to learn strategies or instructional techniques. CARIBE has one of the highest rates in Literacy Completion Points (LCP's).

Students have a wide range of choices in terms of courses to take based on their initial educational assessment. The CARIBE Refugee Program offers courses that prepre students for citizenship exam, General Education Diploma (GED) exam, Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE), and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). CARIBE also offers courses that prepare students for the career and technical field such as English for Academic Skills and ELCATE.

The CARIBE ESOL Curriculum is also enriched by the programs partnership with othe refugee service providers, community and church organizations. Below are the major partners of CARIBE in providing holistic adult education to refugees.

Workshops

FINANCIAL LITERACY

Students of CARIBE participate in several workshops throughout the school year. One of the most popular workshops for the students is the Financial Literacy Workshop hosted by Project Prosper. Students are taught the basics of banking, money management and credit. Project Prosper also does a raffle for the first 50 students who opens an account. The winner receives a certain amount of money that will go towards fees for citizenship application.

HEALTH & NUTRITION

Linda Paige and Jeanette Palecia of the Moffitt Program for Outreach, Wellness, Education and Resources, Moffitt Cancer Center conducts Health and Nutrition Outreach Workshops in all of the CARIBE sites. The workshop focuses on cancer prevention through proper health and nutrition. Moffitt Cancer Center provides informational materials, pedometers, and/or water containers during their training. They also provide students with information regarding upcoming health fairs and referrals for cancer screening. Student love when Linda and Jeanette comes to visit because their presentations are always engaging and fun. They also model proper proper nutrition with the refreshments they provide during their visits.

LAW & SAFETY

Every semester a representative from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department visits the CARIBE sites to hold an informational workshop regarding law and safety. This program is headed by Deputy Marilyn Alvarez. During this workshop a representative from the Sheriff's Department goes over traffic safety, domestic violence, and reporting incident of crime. Students enjoy these workshops because the Sheriff's Department usually sends someone who speaks their native language, allowing students to ask questions and talk about their concerns regarding law and safety.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Every year, Joel Velasco, LEP Outreach Coordinator of Florida Covering Kids and Families, University of South Florida Health, visits the CARIBE sites to conduct informational meetings that focus on obtaining health insurance. Although many of the CARIBE clients have existing coverage through Medicaid, students found the information in these sessions very helpful once their coverage expires. Students always asks questions regarding insurance coverage for their children. This is Joel's area of expertise. He provides them with information and affordable health care options for refugee children. Joel also assists clients in applying for health insurance during his visits.
